The hoopla surrounding the marriage of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, to me, is quite ridiculous. Who cares if they are getting married? Good for them. They produced a child, they got married. Hundreds of people do this every month. But when it is a “celebrity”, why do we care? Is it because through them we live out our own fantasies of having a wedding ceremony with 150 people in a castle on in a sleepy, romantic town in Italy? I personally would not want to be a celebrity or famous. I like walking down the street and no one knows who I am except the old lady at the corner whom I help her take her garbage to the curb every Thursday.
I did have a friend say to me once “But, Jeanette, you want to be a writer and publish your books. What if by fate you make a best seller?” Well, I am already a writer LOL but if I do become a well known novelist, I highly doubt I will have the woes of Britney Spears and Madonna. Stephen King can walk down his street and not be acousted by paparazi (just the occasional stupid person not watching where he is driving and running Mr. King over).
I think America is truly a voyeristic society. We have to gawk at everything. Celebrities and their lives, the car wreck on the side of the road, the neighbor has their shades up so we peek in their window as we go by their house. Privacy is truly not existant.
But then again, when I hear celebrities belly aching that they have no privacy or can’t do anything without having photographers in their faces, I think “well, you are the one who wanted to be famous, you knew it was coming!” Like the Anna Nicole Smith crap. Oh my god will that woman shut up already. I watch Entertainment tonight every one in awhile and that is ALL they show for the past month. She whines that people won’t leave her and her family alone. I feel bad for the passing of her son. No wonder he had to take anti-depressants.
So to the belly aching celebrities, get over it. I think most love the ego boosting of being all over the news no matter if it is positive or negative.
